THE STORY OF ONLY-MAN AND COYOTE
By
Michael Edwin Q.
“Hidatsa legend says once the earth was nothing but sand. The ancient one we call Only-Man walked the earth singing his song: Where did I come from? How did I come to this place?” Since the world was nothing but wet sand, he turned and saw his own tracks. He decided to follow them back to find out where he came from.
“As he traveled, he came upon another man. The two argued about which of them was oldest. They decided they would lie down in the sand, and the first to get up was the youngest. The other man lay down in the sand, but Only-Man placed his cane down to take his place and walked away, singing his song: Where did I come from? How did I come to this place?
“Only-Man walked the entire earth for many years. When he returned he found his cane where he left it. Next to it was a patch of grass where the other man had lain down. He took up his cane, and suddenly the other man sprung up from the ground. ‘I told you I was older than you’ he proclaimed.
“They walked the earth together, creating it anew. They made the earth beautiful. They created plants, and animals. They did this for many years. Then one day, Grandmother Frog said to them, ‘In your zeal you have created too much, there are too many plants and animals in the world. You must create death so the old can make way for the new. They agreed and created death. The child of Grandmother Frog was the first to die. She came crying to them, ‘No, I was wrong. Take death away!’ but they said it was too late, death was here to stay.”
Chris turned forward and looked out the car window. “Well, they sure did a great job. But I have to agree with Grandmother Frog, death is a high price to pay for beauty. Tell me, whatever happened to Only-Man and the other man?”
“After they recreated the world, Only-Man vanished and was never seen or heard from again. The other man turned into a coyote. That is why to this day, every night you can hear the coyotes howl. What they are howling is: Where did I come from? How did I come to this place?
